vice versa

The first recorded lesbian magazine in the United States, 1947-1948

Ben is perhaps most well known for her self-proclaimed “Gayest Magazine in America,” Vice Versa, which she published from June 1947 through February 1948. Many interviews with Ben cover her procedure for creating the magazine at work, when her boss asked her to look busy. In the privacy of her office and with the aid of free office supplies, Ben penned nine issues of her lesbian magazine, which she circulated by hand.

All Tables of Contents below are written precisely as Ben formatted them originally.

Note that as Ben continued to publish Vice Versa, she honed her style for her Tables of Contents (i.e, moving the possessive apostrophe in Bookworm’s Burrow between Volumes 2 and 3 and shifting from two hyphens to an en dash (–) between Volumes 5 and 6).
